Brussels, 28 November 2024 – The Europe Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA) has unveiled its anticipated 2024 Compendium, offering a comprehensive analysis of Europe’s startup ecosystem. Released on the second day of the ESNA Forum 2024, the document outlines critical areas and opportunities in innovation and competitiveness to establish Europe as a global leader in entrepreneurship and technology.

The Compendium offers an in-depth review of Europe's innovation landscape's past, present, and future, presenting a unified approach to building a thriving startup ecosystem. It identifies critical challenges, such as market fragmentation, talent migration, and lagging competitiveness in emerging technologies, while showcasing Europe’s strengths in cleantech, early-stage funding, and a collaborative policy framework.

The State of Europe's Startup Ecosystem: The Compendium unveils striking disparities across Europe’s startup ecosystem. It sheds light on untapped opportunities, including how the EU Startup Nations Standards (SNS) are fostering more startup-friendly policies, such as legal sandboxes to test innovative solutions and digital-first initiatives aimed at cutting bureaucracy.

Groundbreaking EU Policies and Funding: With €6.8 billion invested in cleantech startups in Q1 2024 alone, the Compendium highlights Europe's potential to lead on green and sustainable innovation. It also demonstrates how recent policies like the Digital Markets Act and the New European Innovation Agenda are reshaping the competitive landscape to favour startups and scaleups.

Voices That Matter: For the first time, the Compendium brings together perspectives from entrepreneurs, policymakers, and industry leaders. These voices highlight the urgent need to address talent shortages and scale up high-potential sectors like AI, biotech, and green technologies.

A Blueprint for Growth: The Compendium presents a forward-looking strategy, connecting EU missions with actionable steps. It focuses on five key building blocks essential to Europe's growth: talent, investment, intellectual property, regulatory alignment, and entrepreneurial culture. This holistic roadmap sets Europe apart by addressing ecosystem fragmentation and fostering cross-border collaboration.

Spotlight on Opportunities: Europe’s cleantech leadership takes centre stage, with startups in this sector raising record-breaking investments. By mobilizing resources and adopting new policies, Europe could reverse this trend and secure its place as a leader in generative AI and other frontier technologies.

From Challenges to Solutions: Europe's startup ecosystem faces fierce competition from the US and China, but the Compendium highlights how the region’s unique strengths—like its talent pool and sustainable innovation policies—can be leveraged.

By debuting the Compendium on the second day of the ESNA Forum, ESNA emphasises its centrality to ongoing discussions among policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors. The launch highlights the organisation’s commitment to fostering collaboration and driving tangible outcomes across the startup ecosystem.

This document's integration of EU policies with practical recommendations makes it distinct. It maps out current challenges and connects diverse stakeholder insights with the EU College’s strategic missions, offering a comprehensive guide for fostering innovation and growth.

The EU Startup Nations Standards (SNS) are a cornerstone of this strategy, advocating for eight standards, such as efficient startup registration, streamlined visa processes, and policies to enhance the startup ecosystem.

Arthur Jordão, Executive Director of ESNA, stated: "While the Compendium lays bare the challenges Europe faces, it also provides a clear path forward. By aligning efforts across member states, we can build a thriving startup ecosystem that drives innovation and economic growth, uplifting its competitiveness and societal benefits for future generations."

This Compendium is a practical tool to help stakeholders connect the dots of Europe’s fragmented startup landscape. It marks the start of a collaborative journey to position Europe as a global leader in entrepreneurship and technology.
